Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Precise Diode Laser Work?
The Precise SHP affects soft-tissue at the cellular level. The laser energy vaporizes and modifies soft tissue with great precision, little to no bleeding or swelling, and significantly less postsurgical pain, often without injected anesthetics.
How does the Precise SHP differ from other soft-tissue lasers?
CAO Group is a world-leading innovator and manufacturer of high-technology dental products and equipment. Our innovative diode laser technology is time-tested with 15 years of experience. We have fine-tuned our lasers for the best technology available in its class. Precise energy penetrates about 200 microns, making it safe as well as effective. Tissues are vaporized in a controlled manner. The underlying connective tissue is coagulated and the resulting laser wound is self-sealing requiring no suturing.
Why does the Precise SHP utilize the 810nm wavelength?
The term laser stands for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation", which means a device that produces and amplifies light. The wavelength of the light produced will determine what types of tissues can be modified by the light’s energy. Light waves that emanate from within the visible and near-infrared portions of the electromagnetic spectrum will be readily absorbed into body pigments like melanin in the skin, and heme found in hemoglobin in the blood. They will have virtually no affinity for water and thus, it won’t be absorbed in the surface as it enters soft tissues. Wavelengths located within the mid to far infrared range are attracted to water and the hydroxyapatite crystals that are found in bone and teeth. Thus, these wavelengths are primarily used in hard tissue lasers. With a frequency of 810+/-20 nanometers, the Precise Diode Laser’s wavelength falls into the lower end of the near-infrared spectrum, making it very suitable for soft-tissue applications.

What are the advantages of having a diode laser?
Today's bonding techniques require total control over the operative site. A diode laser ensures the ability to achieve that. No other instrument available to the dentist has had the capability of such precise tissue sculpting. The diode laser is the least traumatic of all competing and conventional instruments. Precise Diode Lasers are affordable and small enough for every practice, simple to operate and easily learned and incorporated into your practice. The Precise SHP Laser has a pain therapy and whitening handpiece to expand the procedures offered to patients.
How has laser dentistry affected patient care?
Laser Dentistry has created a new level of quality dental care. The ability to perform more procedures in less time without sacrificing patient care and comfort is an important advantage over other technologies. Lasers benefit a variety of dental specialties and patients. Lasers can be used near metal crowns, in patients with pacemakers, braces, on teeth with metal amalgams, and in procedures near bone with no contraindications. Patients report that laser treatments are gentle in comparison with an electrosurgery and is substantially less invasive therefore generates less bleeding during the procedure. Lasers are predictable, PRECISE with little or no recession, swelling, necrosis, quicker healing, and reduce the need for sutures.
What should I tell patients why I use a laser?
Many patients are very technologically savvy these days. Many may simply say it’s about time. For those patients less technologically inclined simply tell them lasers are the most precise, least traumatic, and will heal with less post-operative pain than any other technique. There is less chance of infection, and some soft tissue procedures around the gingiva can be completed without anesthesia.
How will it pay for itself?
When the Precise Diode Laser is used, it saves chair time. It makes procedures more effective and simplified because of the complete hemostasis and lack of suturing required. Adding just one frenectomy or fibroma each month will generate more income than the payment for the laser. Many practitioners will be able to add new billable procedures that will reduce referrals and keep procedures in-office. The added capability of the Precise SHP with its pain therapy and whitening handpieces will only compound financial returns.
Does my office need to institute a laser safety program?
According to both the ANSI and OSHA, practices that integrate Class IV lasers in clinical procedures must appoint a Medical Safety Officer. Additional requirements may differ from state to state on the implementation of a laser safety program to assure a safe environment for both workers and patients. It is best to have written procedures in this regard. CAO Group, Inc. recommends adoption of a Laser Safety program and appointment of a Laser Safety Officer.
Do you have a loaner Program?
Yes! We don’t want you to miss a single procedure. If your laser needs service while under warranty CAO will provide a loaner at no charge. A loaner will also be available for a reasonable fee after the warranty period. Contact Customer Care for details (877) 236-4408.
What is the warranty?
The Precise SHP base and foot pedal are under warranty for two years (cable system is 6 months) including costs for labor, parts, loaner, and shipping. Exclusions may apply.
What procedures can be used with the Precise SHP?
The Precise Diode Laser is a new tool that will improve your ability to perform existing procedures faster and more efficiently and will also allow you to expand the services currently offered in your office.
As each clinical situation is unique, the appropriate power setting is primarily determined by the type of procedure to be performed. For example, a more fibrotic tissue requires higher power; or the selected mode of operation, continuous or pulse can be used for pain relief or teeth whitening. The speed of cutting desired by the operator will also determine the power intensity selected, it is always best to use the lowest power setting that will effectively modify the tissue while avoiding tissue charring.
Most commonly performed procedures performed with the Precise Diode Laser:
- Gingivectomy, Gingivoplasty
- Soft Tissue Crown Lengthening
- Troughing for impressions or cementation
- Creating emergence profile for Ovate Pontics
- Recontouring of interproximal tissue
- Implant exposure
- Treating of Aphth Ulcers, Herpetic Lesions
- Biopsy and Fibroma Removal
- Abscess Care - Incision and Drainage
- Frenum Release
- Exposure of slow erupting teeth
- Sealing lymphatics in surgical area
- Soft Tissue curettage for periodontal treatment
- Treating Gingival Hyperplasia
- Joint and Muscle Pain
- Increased Circulation
- Soft Tissue Pain
- Teeth Whitening
How do I provide pain relief to my patients?
The Precise SHP includes a specially engineered handpiece to administer pain relief. Discomfort is temporarily reduced or illuminated for a time through increased blood flow to patients suffering joint and muscle pain. The increased circulation effects of the laser also reduce soft tissue pain.
When using the Precise SHP for pain relief procedures, make sure the handpiece is assembled according to the User Manual and the appropriate laser settings are established as indicated in the procedures table in the Owner's Manual. Position the handpiece over the target area and lightly contact the end of the handpiece onto the tissue. Press and hold the foot pedal down. Use consistent, circular motions to move the handpiece over the target area. Avoid holding the handpiece over the same area for more than a few seconds. Small treatment areas may not require the full 300 seconds of exposure time. Review the owner’s Manual for further details.
How does the Precise White laser-assisted Whitening work?
Most Whitening products use a form of peroxide that reacts with the particles found within the porous tooth structure, altering their appearance. Precise White!™ is a 30% hydrogen peroxide formulation that when activated with laser energy enhances whitening results for a brighter smile than peroxide alone. Review the owner’s Manual for further details.
For many patients, a single 30-minute in-office treatment is all that is needed to achieve optimal results. Some patients may need an additional in-office treatment 3-5 days later or may be prescribed a take-home professional product such as Sheer White!® whitening strips.
